Not Just Mosquitoes

• Carpenter bees

  You’ll usually hear them before you see them — heavy buzzing around eaves, decks and railings, and perfectly round holes about the size of a dime drilled into untreated wood.
  
  They don’t eat wood, they tunnel through it to nest. One season looks cosmetic. Several seasons in the same beam is a repair — and woodpeckers going after the larvae usually do more damage than the bees.

• Wasps & hornets

  Paper wasps under the eaves, yellow jackets in a ground nest halfway down the yard, bald-faced hornets in a tree by the driveway — all common around here, and all best left alone.
  
  Knocking down a nest yourself is how people get stung repeatedly. Yellow jackets in particular defend a ground nest aggressively, and each one can sting many times.
